Performance and Description
If you observe degradation of your Anodes it means your Anodes are well installed and are actively preventing the degree of corrosion that your vehicle and vehicle parts could have been subjected to proportinal to their loss (metal loss magnitudes); for best performance and results, replace any Anodes that appear to be utilized greater than 25% magnitude.
Corrosion is far more likely to occur where electrolyte is present (dirt, dust, mud, water, etc.). Keeping your vehicle clean of debris is the best defence against corrosion and paint or body perforations. The Powers Corrosion Inc. vehicle Anode kit is intended to aid in protection against corrosion where it may be difficult to clear debris (which will foster an environment through residual electrolyte (dirt, dust, mud, water, etc.) that promotes the development of corrosion).
Areas of concern are most commonly inner wheel wells, where the inner lip of the wells fill with debris are rarely cleared of this debris when washing the exterior surfaces of vehicles. Although corrosion is often observed over the wells of the wheels on the exterior of the vehicle, the electrochemical corrosion cell that caused the corrosion most likely started and grew from debris inside the wheel wheel (allowing the corrosion cell), until such a point as the steel could no longer support a secure base for the vehicle’s paint. This area and others, cab corners (bottom rear corers of truck cabs), rocker panels (foot access piece of the door), etc., are difficult to clear all debris. If you can find a safe place to install Anodes in close proximity to these areas, you may be able to prevent corrosion induced by built up debris hidden in hard to clean crevices, and extend the life of your vehicle, or at least, the life of it’s paint.
Self drilling screws will provide adequate installation requirement and are included, with spares. The threads from the screw must maintain good contact to the vehicle portion to which it is installed, where screw head contact must be good to the Anode. This completes the required electrictronic portion of the Cathodic Protection circuit. In the event the installation hole is stripped, a nut and bolt assembly should be utilized, where the vehicle area intended to be in contact with the nut should be cleaned of paint or coating. Copper Paste can be used to ensure good screw or bolt/nut contact with the vehicle. Stainless Steel hardware should be used to avoid 1consumtion of the anode t protect the nut / bolt, 2the nut / bolt failing and falling off prematurely due to possible corrosion, 3the vehicle metal protecting the nut / bolt (vehicle actively rusting to protect the nut / bolt). Failure to secure good metal-to-metal contact between the Anode and Vehicle will prevent the system from performing as desired.
Expectations
This is not a Black Magic approach, this is a sound and proven electrochemical reaction in practice in thousands of industries, when a more active metal (the Anodes) afford electrons and subsequent protective mass to lesser active metal (Cathodes) through an electronic path, and also the electrolyte. Much the way Galvanized, or Zinc coated, products afford greater anti-corrosion provisions, and also how buried or submersible structures are protected, as they have the forementioned electrolyte present (they’re buried or floating in it..).
